Gio-Goi named Menswear High Street Retailer of the Year 2011
Whilst we were boozing it up over Christmas, top Manc bloggers and fashion industry insiders Jordan McDowell (from Fashion Rambler) and Lynda Mojo (from Body Confidential) were busy awarding their 2011 Fashion & Beauty Awards - and we're chuffed to announce they awarded Gio-Goi the Menswear High Street Retailer Of The Year gong! Here's what they had to say about us...
"Born out of the Madchester movement to a tune of acid house and a Happy Monday beat, Gio-Goi burst onto the northern music scene in the late 1980s. By intermixing a love for late nights at the Hacienda with a thirst for style, the brand quickly became the major representative for a northern perspective on urban fashion. Fast-forward to 2011 and the brand opened their Manchester flagship in Manchester's Arndale Centre. The centre of the city and the original base for other northern success stories like JD Sports; Gio-Goi is in good company. The future can only be one illuminated by the bright lights of the DJ booth."
Cheers guys - we're making room in our awards cabinet and cracking open the celebratory beers as we type. Big congrats to all our fellow winners too - check out the full list here.
The Gio-Goi sale is officially ON, with savings of up to 50% to be had - think of it as an early Christmas present from us to you ('cause we're just nice like that). And as Xmas bonus, there's still time to order in time for the big day - just place your order before 2.30pm on Thursday 22 December (clicking on Express Delivery at checkout) to get your gear in time.
*Still* in need of some help getting sorted? Here's a selection of the best buys to put a smile on their face this Sunday...

Want your chestnuts roasting on an open fire this Christmas? No, we didn't think so...
Save yourself from a yuletide roasting and get shopping for your lady-love sooner rather than later this Christmas. As voted by the lasses at Gio-Goi HQ, these items are top of the wanted list.
"This longer length, super-warm Roydon sweat (pictured above) comes in a monochrome fairisle print which makes it perfect for Christmas. It's the sort of thing you just don't take off once you've got it so is top of my list, unless of course someone swoops in and gets it for me. Hint hint. " Amy, 28, Online Manager
"The Fess'Up Dress (pictured above) has been one of the most coveted numbers in the office for a while now. You can't see on this piccy, but on the reverse is an open back with red colour-pop detail which separates our LBD from the pack. This is EXACTLY what I'm after for the Christmas and the New Year clubbing season so it's top of my wishlist." Jill, 24, Merchandiser
"I reckon if you're going to get a Chrimbo pressie from Gio-Goi, you're best to go classic. Take the Charm Top- racer back, large ever-so-sparkly logo... job done. And for anyone who's feeling the winter pinch, can't harm to mention this is style is currently on Sale. Just don't tell her that..." Amanda, 22, Design
"I'm pretty shocking with timekeeping and would love a new watch, but don't really want one that's going to fade into the background. Cue one of these fluro timepieces that I'd wear with more muted outfits so it stands out." Effie, 24, Marketing
Launching... Disorder Party Pics, DS3 High-Tops Part Deux & The Essential Navvy Hat
The Disorder mag party, thrown in celebration of their 37th issue feat. cover star Example, was not only a showcase in a night out done well but our latest Gio-Goi Contraband styles. Check out a selection of pics from the night here or the full album on our facebook page.
And on the theme of celebrating, the high-top junkies amongst you will be chuffed to know that the Citroen DS3 Racing High-Tops are back and available to buy now. The first injection was a complete sell out within days, so with limited units available our advice would be to put pedal to the online metal.
And lastly, but by no means leastly, we're about to bring you a gift idea you will hate us for (who really wants to start mulling over the complexities of Christmas yet?) and love us for in equal measures.
Introducing the Navvy Knitted Hat, complete with pom pom and dangly toggle bits. More seriously though, this number wil not only serve to keep shell-likes cosy for incoming winter but also lends some serious cred to any outfit. Little known fact; stitched in is a line you'll find on a number of our styles "118-135BPM" which just so happens to be the Beats Per Minute tempo for most dance music tuuuunes. Now you know!
Gio-Goi Position: Store Manager of Gio-Goi Manchester, in the Arndale!
My favourite Gio-Goi style at the minute has to be: SEGRAY check shirt-great feel and so comfy!

My daily uniform is: Slick, smart and comfy!!!! Come down to store and get some gear ;P

Best gig I’ve ever been to: Faithless @ the O2 arena. It was banging and the gig was immense... closely followed by De La Soul.

If I was a drink, I’d be: Mojito Finito
The strangest thing I’ve ever seen: Has to be Dynamo with his crazy illusions and tricks.
My Favourite Thing: Getting on that road to clear your head and burn those sneakers out. Run… Run… Run…
What makes me cringe is: Folk that score paper with their nails! No need.

Launching this week...Out On The Edge Menswear Picks
Taking wardrobe classics, such as modest pair of Chinos, and adding a twist is the smartest way to bring threads up to date. This week we're launching a range of styles which have achieved exactly that, through contrast edging, collars and cuffs.
Our Drum Trousers have proved a massive hit with Gio-Goi fans. The simple Chino shape in a mid cream, has been moved on a step by bringing up the length a couple of inches and adding the fine blue stripe fabric to fashion-roll hems.
Equally, the Prang Polo (available in Navy and Charcoal) is an easy go-to. Denim, chinos and shorts all make easy pairings. But to stop your look fading into the background, contrast collars and highlight chest details work together to bring you up a sartorial notch.
For those occassions requiring a finessed turn-out, reach for the Snape shirt. Set apart from workwear by the darker design details, tuck in for streamlined style or leave loose to nail smart-casual. Easy when you know how eh?
Mike Jennings, World Welterweight Champion for Gio-Goi Trakstar
Shot at the infamous Collyhurst Boxing Academy, Mike Jennings can be seen training, sweating and styling out looks from the Autumn 11 drop of Gio-Goi Trakstar- a collection of sport-inspired, fluro urban lines for serious hard hitters.
Launching this week... Gio-Goi Manchester, Quilted Jackets & Win Tickets to the Homecoming Gig
It's about time Gio-Goi came back to where it all started. Gio-Goi Manchester opens its doors on the 25th of this fine month in the Arndale. Drop by to see our new store fit and the latest Autumn 2011 range.
And to celebrate, we are re-creating one of the raves, thrown by Gio-Goi brand forefathers at Moho Live. For tickets to this one off event see details above, click through to our competition page now.
Can't quite bear to think about heavy winter jackets as yet? Fair enough.
May we suggest in their place our quilted numbers, available as both menswear and womenswear. Light enough to grab on your way out, but warm enough to keep you going when the pub garden chill kicks in, these new lines are great for the transitional seasons.
School days. They’re supposed to be fun, carefree, the best time of your life… No, we don’t remember it like that either and neither does this guy.
It’s tough. One dodgy backpack and you’re screwed for the rest of your term days- which is where we hotstep in. Our New Skool range aims to separate geek from chic in one swoop. Think simple stylish lines that look make the grade either side of those gates.
First step – the bag. Try the Bookee Bag for all your, erm, books or the Bering bag for something a bit bolder. Team with a Deepa Tee and Kaos Knit and you have the foundations of student-style well done.
Cross your t's and dot the i's, by investing in a playground worthy Winter warmer. Check out the uber trendy quilted Squeeler Jacket or the Joser Jacket which comes in a freeze-rejecting wool mix and oversized pockets for storing protractors, calculators, illicit chewing gum stashes and the like.
Top off with a rousing re-enaction of Canned Heat in your next assembly, and you'll be destined for top of the class. Promise.
Launching this week... The Ecowel Top, International Delivery and Dionne Bromfield's Pick
Perfect for the in-between seasons, this lightweight oversized-neck jumper is a great additional layer.
The Ecowel Top comes in a soft jersey black and would be right at home over denims, shorts and your finest trewsers. And not a bad sartorial choice bank-balance wise either at only 35 smackers. Shop Now
Come the end of this week, Gio-Goi.com will be shipping internationally. From Alabama to Zimbabwe, there will be no limits to our Gio-Goi brand fans. We'll announce the launch as soon as it's live on this here blog.
We're not ones to wish the last sunny days of Summer away, but the sight of mini-diva Dionne in our Reachout Hoodie has us thinking about snuggling up in a brand new sweat. Hop to the head of the queue and secure yours now- this sellout style comes in Frost Blue (pictured above) Charcoal Marl, Panther Pink and Winter White. Shop Now
Launching this week... Lounge Layers, Ibiza Clubwear & New Skool
New to the site this week...
Soft jersey and fine knit layers work with lined joggers and relaxed, cuffed denims to make the ultimate lounge-lover wear. Keep to navys, greys, whites, blacks and neutrals with highlight pops for timeless casual style. Perfect for the morning after the night before. Shop Now.
Acidic fluro tees with graphic statements, contrasted with shorts, denims and cuffed trousers really pop with colour block accessories. The sun is shining and the weather is sweet so clash up during the day, and pare back at night for authentic Ibizan cool. Shop Now.
Cultivate great Gio-Goi cred early on, with New Skool- a selection of black, white and grey lines perfect for term time, and stylish enough for town. Shop Now.
It’s all so hazy now, but if the sore heads are anything to go by, last night's party definitely didn’t disappoint. It’s safe to say Cream’s 17th birthday put the Average Jo's teenage knees-ups to shame.
Super-club Amnesia was rammed from the get-go, bursting at the seams from 1am and continuing to get even busier with queues still raging at 5am as the sun came up.
Sean Hughes and Gareth Wyn had both the terrace and the main room ready to explode. By the time Paul Van Dyk and Calvin Harris jumped on the decks, practically every tune had been dropped, ensuring the baying masses went crazy. And the vibe in dance-mecca Amnesia ramped up yet another notch once Ferry Corsten and Laidback Luke started tearing it up.
Highlights included big tunes from MGMT, Aloe Blacc, David Guetta and Calvin Harris on the terrace, followed by anthemic numbers in the main room such as Underworld’s Born Slippy.
For those of you who weren’t lucky enough to make it down, ensure you get yourselves to Cream, sponsored by Gio-Goi, sooner rather than later. With a line up boasting Above & Beyond, Eddie Halliwell, Calvin Harris & Laidback Luke, you may have missed the birthday, but this party is running all summer.
Rock & Roll Fashion. Fashot.TV takes a trip to Gio-Goi HQ
Get your rocks out as Fashot.TV jams out with Daystar, pops into Gio-Goi HQ and also interviews the co-founder of Barneys! All in the name of fashion. Enjoy!
The Gio Goi brand, who stand for what and who they are, has been a worldwide hit since it relaunched in 2005. Here we speak to Adam Ward, the footwear designer at the label, about drawing shoes in art class and how he wouldn’t change his job for anything, even Olympic championship.
PN: How did your career as a footwear designer at Gio Goi come about?
AW: My journey with Gio Goi footwear started just over 1 year ago, while working for an American brand, Pentland approach me about a young casual fashion brand they are in partnership with, with my passion of casual sports footwear and after meeting the team the energy and passion for Gio Goi was clear to see, which made my discussion to join the team easy.
PN: What influenced you to focus on footwear design? Is it a world that you have always been destined to work in?
AW: From an early age I have always loved sport and in every subject at school I would try and involve sport as much as I could. From as early as I can remember I used to always take shoes or trainers into my art classes to draw which I guess is where my passion for drawing shoes began to grow and develop. My main hobbies have always been sports and Design, while finally realizing I wasn’t ever going to be an Olympic champion the ideal option was to combined my 2 loves of design and Sport, which naturally lead me into footwear design. I don’t know if I was destined to be a footwear designer, but I wouldn’t change it for the world.
PN: Tell us a little about Gio-Goi as a brand and how does this brand identity influence your designs?
AW: Gio Goi is a British fashion brand created in the 1980’s and has recently been re-launched in 2005. The Label has its roots in the Manchester band scene of the late 1980’s, which mixed indie rock and dance music. The Gio Goi brand oozes energy, passion and color. The brands image is young, fresh and original with the clothing and footwear teams working closely together we are trying to create a ‘Gio Goi look’ rather than individual products and the brands heritage has to be at the forefront of this.
PN: When designing the Collections do you have a particular type of consumer in mind?
AW: Gio Goi has three key DNA segments, CONTRABAND: the pioneer fashion label that fuses casual wear and denim with a rock ‘n’ roll spirit, GIO GOI MAIN: Engineering and considered urban casualwear and denim and TRAKSTAR: Young casual sportswear with a fresh twist. This DNA helps us identify a look and feel for what each consumer needs and desires our in each area, giving us a clear design brief for each consumer.
PN: The AW11 Collection consists of an eclectic mix of styles and colours- how would you describe it and what kind of things influenced the collection?
AW: The main influence has to be the brand and what we stand for and who we are, that has to at the heart of every collection. We also need to be aware of the key trends for the season which in this case was a very strong military theme, but giving that trend the ‘Gio Goi factor’. At the same time as looking at the key fashion trends I also make sure I look outside of footwear and clothing to see the handwriting of other brands in other industries such as product design and car designs as detailing is key in these areas.
PN: What is in store for Gio Goi over the next six months?
AW: The next few months will be very exciting for Gio Goi, with the launch of the Gio Goi footwear collaboration with the Citroen DS3 racing, as well as the Launch of its Manchester store which is a key market for the Gio Goi brand. Plus the launch of the new SS’12 range which takes on a new direct for Gio Goi footwear. Watch out for it!
THE CROWN JULS. SALES, FORWARD SLASH, GIO-GOI SOCIAL SEC
Name: Juls Dawson Nickname: Stools/Bearded lady/Doodman/Co-relauncher/Frodo/Cubiekid/shoebox head
Gio-Goi Position: Currently sat at my desk typing this (and Menswear Sales Supremo)
My favourite Gio-Goi style at the minute has to be: Mine! They don’t call me the fashion guru for nothing!
My Gio-Goi highlight so far is: Too many to mention, but going up on stage to collect “Young Fashion Brand of the Year 2009” at the fashion industry’s version of the Oscars!
My daily uniform is: I sell the gear to all the retailers 6 months in advance, so I rotate the next season’s threads daily! I’m a walking, talking sneak preview of what’s to come!
My first album was: Revolver, The Beatles
Best gig I’ve ever been to: It was a gigathon TBH that lasted 4 years....every Saturday from 1988 until 1992 at the Hacienda nightclub, Manchester, England, (RIP)
The last night out I had: They kinda blur into one....ask me my last night in!
If I was a drink, I’d be: I’m kinda known for my 25 love affair with Stella....has to be Le Grande, with embossed logo.
My worst job ever: Chambermaid(man) in a Blackpool B and B (I got fired!)
The strangest thing I’ve ever seen: Anthony Donnelly, one of the co-founders of Gio-Goi, on a legendary night out, when I wrapped his head in cling film and made him smoke through an airway I made for him through his nostrils.
My Favourite Thing: Wrapping Anthony’s head in cling film (see above)
What makes me cringe is: Polka dots....I hate them!
My Dodgy Habit: Can’t put that on here! Sorry ...
I’d like to look like: Me! (but 15 years ago in my prime!)
The last time I lied: Quite recently actually.....See above question 3!
Have I ever been arrested? Only when I drove my Mum’s Jaguar into a lake....I kinda spoilt her holiday with that phonecall!!
If I could be any fictional character I’d be: Dudeman....he fights crimes of fashion.

My Gio-Goi highlight so far: Being featured on this here blog.
My daily uniform is: Something from the Gio Showroom rails...ssssssh!
My first album was: Ermmmmm....Off The Wall by Michael Jackson I think!
Best gig you’ve ever been to: Roy Ayers and several unannounced guests in London was awesome but Method Man (Wu Tang) and Redman in London was just Nuts!!
The last night out I had: Drinks at Gio HQ with the GG Allstars
Guilty pleasure: On a bad day there’s too many to list
If I was a drink, I’d be: Whiskey Sour
My worst job ever: Tough one...London Lamppost Light Bulb Changer or a Tower Block Window Fitter
The strangest thing I’ve ever seen: Very recently on the way to Gio HQ, I saw a woman running in the station, obviously late for work or an appointment. As she ran, her loose wrap-around skirt was coming down. It actually showed all of her knickers before she realised and managed to grab it before it came off completely....very funny!!!
If I had a time machine, I’d: Go back to 1960’s Italy (The Talented Mr Ripley) and chill for 50 years with Whiskey Sours in the sunshine. Or further back to the Wild West and be a gun-slinging Cowboy on a jet black horse married to Cheyanne Squaw living on an old ranch. Not that I ever thought about it LMAO
My biggest backfire: hahaha That’s bad I can’t say.
If quizzes are quizzical, what are tests?: TESTICLES...LOL... can I say that?
Feast your eyes and ears on this acoustic version of Prayin' by Plan B. Shot at the Gio-Goi gig in honour of the Aberdeen store opening, this set was exclusive to only a generous handful of competition winners and you lovely blog readers.

IBIZA CLOSING PARTIES? AH, GO ON THEN. WIN WIN WIN!

Swathed in swagger and Gio-Goi, this MC duo from Nottingham went down a storm at the BBC Introducing stage at Glasto last weekend.
They've recently been likened by BBC reviewers as having a "style of delivery which recalls Dizzee and Tempz at their best." so expect to hear them all over your radio soon!
It's not every day you come into work to find your office astro-turfed, surrounded by make up artists, photographers and a mob of models.
So as you can imagine there's quite a buzz around Gio-Goi this fine June afternoon. And with the weather putting in a less than sterling effort these recent weeks, why not bring parklife inside?
So fast forward to Summer 2012 with these sneak preview behind-the-scenes piccies of our Gio-Goi shoot. Enjoy!
My Gio-Goi highlight so far: Opening the first Gio-Goi store was a great experience and meeting all the head office mob as well- was a real challenge but we did it….. eventually!!!
My daily uniform is: Summer is here so my chicken legs are out I’m afraid- Hicking shorts and the Tranzam T-shirt... looking good!
My first album was: Oasis.. definitely maybe a true classic I’m sure you’ll agree?
Best gig I’ve ever been to: The Plan B Secret Gig for the store opening at Snafu, Aberdeen. Free booze with good friends- an AMAZING night.
The last night out I had: I saw two seagulls fighting in the street. The most dumbfounding thing I've seen for a while. It was epic!
If I was a drink, I’d be: A WKD. Looks quite good but to be honest its cheap. My aim is to upscale and be a shot of vodka the next time I answer these questions.
My worst job ever: Packing Milk in a dairy factory, the worst week of my life. It was bloody freezing and had to wear a ridiculous hat with a cow on it!!!!!!!!!
The strangest thing I’ve ever seen: This 10 year old kid on TV who could fit his arm down his throat and sing at the same time. How would you even be able to figure that out?
My Favourite Thing: My X-Box. Where would I be without it?
What makes me cringe is: Seeing creepy people talking to perfectly normal people on the bus. I feel so bad for the normal person but at the same time I’m praying they don’t talk to me.
I’d like to look like: A better looking version of me. Or Gerard Butler as my girlfriend seems to prefer him!!
The last time I lied: A week ago when my girlfriend asked me if I had eaten her chocolate. We had a huge row because she knew I was lying but I never gave in!! Sometimes you gotta lie.
If I could be any fictional character id be: Superman… but that’s probably too obvious. So I'll say one of the TeleTubbies just because they look like they got it easy.
Soul popstrel Dionne Bromfield popped into our showroom last week to model the fruit of our S11 & A11 collection labours.
Famed for a voice beyond her 15 years and relationship with Godmother Amy Winehouse, debut single 'Yeah Right' was an incredible smash followed up with recent release 'Foolin'.
Hundreds of items available now in the Gio-Goi.com sale. Up to 50% off the best summer lines. Our pick of the A-team? The Stokey- Our short sleeved, contrast check shirt. Shop Now.
Strawberry Fields Forever. All aboard the Gio-Goi bus.

A Day With My Manbag by Sam Doyle, Gio-Goi Insider
Normally a subscriber to the ‘stuff crap into my jean pockets until a growth size bump appears’ philosophy, I, Sam Doyle have undertaken to tote around a dashing Gio-Goi bag for the day to see how it changes my life for the better/worse.
Generally I accept that women tend to have the skinny on the practical side of life, so I’m undertaking this task with an open mind.
7.30am Wake up. Look at bag. Bag looks at me.
7.45am Gleefully realize that my manbag will comfortably hold a man-size lunch which will help in my fight to stem the flow of non-existing funds. Am carving up a cheese ploughman club (white bread), adding in a yorkie and a can of coke. Into the Tupperware. Into the bag. So far, A+++.
8.00am Leave the house. Forgot my bag. Sh!t.
8.05am Leave the house Part 2, back in the habit. Bag contains Oyster card, lunch, fags and other essentials. However, can’t quite resist putting my keys in my pocket.
8.30am Packed tube. Sweaty tube. Keys in pocket drilling a lock size hole into my arse. Wish I’d put them in my bloke-tote. Have I found man’s new best friend?
9.00am Arrive at work. Couple of wolf whistles from well-meaning colleagues, assuring me of masculinity. Fellow femme-financier Jo has back ache- from the weight of her Mary Poppins size holdall. Consider asking for danger money.
12.30pm Sandwich eaten. Satisfaction reigns. Tupperware replaced into bag, at which point I notice a number of teeny tiny interior pockets in which to store the contents currently sitting like landfill at the bottom. Nice touch.
5.30pm Long day, and it’s time to hit the bar downstairs. Is it me, or am I attracting some strange looks? Spot another guy in the pub garden crowd with a manbag. Our eyes meet. With an almost imperceptible nod, he acknowledges our similar sartorial choices. It’s like driving a mini.
6.30pm Back on the tube. Nabbed a seat. Can’t resist casting admiring looks down at the new addition nestled on my lap. Look up and have cleared a 3m radius on an otherwise packed carriage. Apparently repeatedly staring at crotch is not the way to go.
7.00pm Made it home. Passed Go. Collected £200 smackers. Am looking at the world through new accessor’eyes (geddit?). Have to admit, there really is something in this Manbag movement, and apart from accidentally velcroing myself to the hosiery of a pensioner on the Northern Line it has been a successful experiment.
11pm Smugly hang bag on back of bedroom door. Quite a jolly addition. Lawrence Llewellyn Bowen eat your heart out. Night night manbag.
Voted ‘Best Global Club’ Amnesia remains one of the most famous dance destinations in the world. And the long-reigning Thursday night Cream residency continues to rule the partying calendar and attract the pre-eminents of Ibizan night life. Past attendees have included Leo Di Caprio, P. Diddy and Elle Macpherson to name a few.
So with Cream @ Amnesia's crazy history this historic pairing quickly became the ultimate partner in crime for Gio-Goi. And to celebrate our sponsorship of Cream for the 4th season running, we've released a series of guy-tees and lady-tops to keep those hedonistic flashbacks alive.
So whether you're packing your bags and fancy looking the part, or want to don these limited run styles as a badge of honour upon your triumphant return, jump all over these nifty numbers sooner rather than later.
My favourite Gio-Goi style at the minute has to be: There’s still nothing better than throwing on one of our hoodies, so I’m going for the Rhyme Sweat.
What’s your Gio-Goi highlight so far: Re-launching the site in October last year, and then again this month. It’s great to see a load of hard work coming together.
My daily uniform is: Lots of slouchy jersey... hareem trousers, vests that sort of thing.
My first album was: Embarrassing. Best Dance Music in the World Volume 1? Followed by 2, 3, 4... I'm a creature of habit.
Best gig you’ve ever been to: Watching the Foo Fighters at Reading years ago. Absolutely amazing.
My worst job ever: Packing leaflets in a windowless factory in between terms at uni. An alarm would sound if you placed your finished box on the scales and it was under or over weight. I lasted 3 days before I ran out for lunch and didn’t come back...
The strangest thing I’ve ever seen: Foetus in foetu. I can’t cope even thinking about it.
If I had a time machine, i’d: Probably do something cunning (and totally unimaginative) like go back and invent the internet, and take the cash.
Have I ever been arrested? No. Although I have been in the back of a police van after being swept up in some delinquent behaviour. Wrong place, wrong time...
Strangest dream you’ve ever had: I had a recurring dream of running through a safari park... I looked down and I had giraffe legs.
Favourite saying: Upstairs for thinking, downstairs for dancing.
If quizzes are quizzical, what are tests? Testicles. There I said it, Testicles.
Here’s something that should whet the appetite of all you fashion-conscious, music-lovers out there – Gio-Goi has arrived in shopping destination Buchanan Street, Glasgow.
And to celebrate, in conjunction with music mag demi-gods Clash, we threw a roadblock gig at Stereo for a host of competition winners and fans of the incredible line-up including The Subways, the Young Aviators.
Watch this short edit of the night to see how it went down.
CLASH REVIEW- Glasgow Store Opening Gig with THE SUBWAYS
It’s been a while, but The Subways are back on the scene. And what better way to kick off their UK tour than with a free gig for their Glaswegian fans – courtesy of Gio-Goi. Taking place at Stereo in the heart of Glasgow city, the celebrations were twofold as Glasgow’s first Gio-Goi store now graces Buchanan Street.
The evening, that took place in association with Clash, started off with audible excitement as eager fans donned their wristbands, clutched their complimentary Kopparbergs and waited patiently for the bands to begin.
Kicking off proceedings were Glasgow-based Irish boys, Young Aviators. Drawing in a host of local fans, the band tore through their half hour set with an enthusiasm that mirrored the crowd’s. Drummer, Markey, got so carried away that his bass pedal fell apart in the middle of their set, but he redeemed himself without too much interruption, and did so with a smile on his face.
Next up were the headline act: The Subways. After recently completing their new album, ‘Money & Celebrity’, the band were clearly excited to get back out on stage. They had new material to unleash on the audience and the audience were more than ready to hear it. Reactions from the crowd barely faltered between new and old material, with obvious exceptions.
Early on in their set ‘Oh Yeah’ provoked a surge of energy, and with such a punchy chorus fans found it almost impossible to avoid singing along. The ferocity with which the band charged around the stage (although drummer, Josh, understandably stayed seated) was baffling. How they manage to keep the music on form, I just don’t know. It’s pretty safe to say that The Subways give all they’ve got in their performances, whether it’s to 300 people in Stereo, or a crowd of thousands at Reading Festival.
Billy cupped his ears screaming “Come on!” at the crowd. With a frenzied look on his face that almost bordered on maniacal, he seized his guitar, snarled at the audience and ripped into the next song.
By the time the band got on to ‘Rock and Roll Queen’ it was like a scaled-down festival. People were raised onto the shoulders of their mates while a continual stream of crowd surfers emerged, each surfer waiting patiently for the launch pad on the stage to clear and then throwing themselves back into the masses.
“Off! Off! Off!” came the chant from the crowd. Had they had enough? Of course not – they wanted Billy to strip down and expose his tattooed torso. He was happy to oblige, but when the chants moved on to Charlotte, she was less keen.
Then for the encore. But is it technically an encore of the band don’t actually leave the stage? Instructions came from Billy – they would just turn around and if everyone cheered loud enough, they’d turn back around a play a couple more songs. It would have been very awkward if people didn’t play along, but fortunately the arrangement panned out quite nicely.
As is the beauty of such intimate gigs, a handful of lucky fans clinched photos and autographs, but everybody left with a smile on their face and The Subways ringing in their ears.
You’ve booked your flights and found a crash pad. There’s only one thing left to sort: THE Ibiza party schedule. With less than a month until the season starts, it’s time to think about where you should be spending your nights once the sun’s gone down (and come back up). It may only be small but the white isle has more parties than Plan B has awards. So, if you want to make sure that it doesn’t go Pete Tong this summer have a gander through our Ibiza 2011 guide.
Without a doubt, top of your list should be legendary club Amnesia. This award winning dance mecca has been hosting world famous nights since it became Ibiza’s first club back in the 1970’s. And no self respecting dance music fan should miss Cream on Thursdays. The 2011 opening party is set to rock Ibiza on Thursday 16th June with Paul van Dyk at the decks. Gio-Goi is sponsoring the 17th Cream season so whilst we may be slightly biased, we can’t stress enough how bleedin’ good this night is. We’ll see you there.
If you are in any fit state after the night before, on a Friday you need to get yourself to Pacha. The main man himself Mr Pete Tong will be spinning the decks every week. There’s a reason this guy’s name has become part of the English language.
Sunday nights should be spent in the presence of another Ibiza legend Judge Jules who gives the day of rest a whole new meaning. Judgment Sunday at Eden is a trance lover’s paradise and is the only way to end your weekend. You’ve been warned.
Finally, if you’re still standing on Monday, head to the world’s largest nightclub Privilege where music maestro & Gio-Goi afficianado Tiesto is back to entertain the masses. Considering he previously sold out Privilege twice in 3 days (the club holds a mere 10,000 people), we’d say he’s pretty good.
So, there you have it- our guide to the party capital of the world. We’d love to say more but frankly there just isn’t the space. Have a good one.

What do Daniel Craig, Thierry Henry and Alex Turner all have in common? Cash to burn? A scary female following? Both on the money, but the answer we're looking for is this... They’ve all been spotted wearing a Harrington jacket in recent months.
Since its inception in 1937, this jacket has become THE badge of style spreading from screen to street, and quickly adopted by all men mod in the 60s. Over the years, a range of enviably famous guys have donned the Harrington; from movie stars (‘King of Cool’ Steve McQueen) and superheroes (Christopher Reeves’ Superman) to indie guys (Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner) and house legends such as Chase & Status (count the Harringtons in the new release Blind Faith).
So whilst giving a respectful nod to Harringtons gone by, we’ve come up with our own Gio-Goi spin on things. Featuring ribbed waist-section, and zip-thru detail for that classic Harrington fit, our Joeprimo carves out its own niche with a topside of stand-out check. Team with trousers and a shirt, polo and jeans... either way, this lightweight checked jacket screams attitude. We can’t promise that you’ll become an international love God overnight but at least you’ll look the part.
Nailing the laidback look is hard. One too many slouches or jersey folds and you’re off the sports-chic track and veering dangerously into slobbing territory. Our answer to your sportswear woes? The Averis Joggers.
These super soft drop-crotch trousers come in black or grey and hit the right high note with the fashion-forward shape. All the plus points of leggings mixed with a dollop of street. To finish your look, layer, layer, layer. Jersey racer backs, zip thrus, lightweight jackets… you get the idea.
Sick of seeing the same airbrushed advertising crap, we commissioned 'Live Who You Are' a series of short films to celebrate our 21st year.
Each episode focuses on a topic, charting the beliefs, musings and demons from the great and the good of Manchester. Rants from cult personalities such as Alan Erasmus, Clint Boon, Justin Moorhouse and Mike Joyce mix it up with ticket touts, comedians, doctors, solicitors, addicts, footballers, musicians and actors.
To celebrate the opening of our first UK store in Union Square, Aberdeen, Gio-Goi threw a phenomenal secret Plan B gig, complete with late night Chris Lake set.
Packed to the rafters with Gio-Goi competition winners, this night was one to be remembered. Delivering a fresh acoustic set, Plan B did us proud.
Tiesto & Mark Knight 'Beautiful World' feat. Gio-Goi
Recently voted by Mixmag’s masses as ‘the greatest DJ of all time’, Tiesto’s star, after 17 years of performing is still in ascension. And the latest release from the Netherlands’ born musician ‘Beautiful World’ with DJ Mark Knight is set to grab this summer’s playlists by the scruff yet again.
Starring bonafide Gio-Goi gear from the nineties, Blind Faith from Chase & Status evokes a real nostalgia for some crazy warehouse raves gone by. View the video now.
Gio-Goi sponsors The Big Snow Festival, March 2011
The Big Snow Festival, Andorra, 13th-20th March 2011. Sponsored by Gio-Goi. Line up included Devlin, Example, Judge Jules, Goldie, Scott Mills and Brandon Block.
How do most 9 year olds spend their weekend? Playing on the computer? Kicking a football? Not if you’re a member of The Dazl Crew, a cheerleading boy troupe from Leeds. These young lads recently spent their free time shooting the latest music video for world renowned DJ Tiesto. Not bad for a bunch of kids from some of the most deprived areas in the North.
They may be Europe’s only boy’s cheerleading squad but The Dazl Crew have made a huge impact since they got together in 2009. The boys aged 9-14 have already picked up trophies at the British Cheerleading Association’s International Championships and last year raised £14,000 worth of funding. Forget girls doing high kicks because these boys are firmly putting some urban attitude into cheerleading.
And now they are set to become a sensation in the new music video for Tiesto and DJ Mark Knight’s single Beautiful World where they can be seen showing some serious moves. Clad in Gio-Goi for the video, squad member Harvey Pratt, aged 9, says, ‘I’m getting the feeling of becoming Billy Elliot.’ There may not be a ballet pump in sight but these boys really are living out the kind of film fantasy most of us could only dream of.
Name: Jo Bohling aka JoBo Gio-Goi Position: Marketing Guru
My favourite Gio-Goi style at the minute has to be:The Drill Shorts. I've got all three colours and chuck them on day in day out in the summer.
My Gio-Goi highlight so far: Has to be the secret Plan B gig for our Aberdeen store opening. Plan B did an incredible acoustic set, and the club was rammed with Gio-Goi competition winners. The free drink was gratefully received too.
My daily uniform is: Boring me to tears.
My first album was: Adam and the Ants. Prince Charming. Not too embarassing...
Best gig you’ve ever been to: Radiohead, Victoria Park back in 2000.
The last night out I had: Sunday night at Fashion Kicks in Manchester.
If I was a drink, I’d be: A Bloody Mary
My worst job ever: I worked as a kitchen help at our local pub in the school holidays. Boil in the bag meals! Nutritious.
The strangest thing I’ve ever seen: I made the mistake of laughing at a storage unit on fire... only to find out it was my storage unit. Karma's a bitch.
If I had a time machine, i’d: Go back the last Euro millions draw.
My biggest backfire: Trying to impress someone at an auction by bidding up the lot. And being landed with it.
Have I ever been arrested: Yes, just the one time. For being naked outside my friend's house having slept walked out of the window. I was trying to break back in at the time.
If quizzes are quizzical, what are tests?: Testicular
